Country parks [1]

What are SANGS?

SANGS - Suitable Alternative Natural Green Spaces - are country parks or green spaces that have been specially created or enhanced to provide high-quality areas for dog walkers, residents and visitors. These sites are the primary focus for recreation, thereby reducing pressure on protected areas such as heathland habitat.

The Thames Basin Heaths Partnership

What is it?
The Thames Basin Heaths Partnership [6] is a partnership of local councils, land managers and nature conservation bodies conserving the heathlands of the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA) [7] across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
Why does it exist?
The heathlands of the SPA are home to fascinating wildlife you won't find elsewhere. The protection is due to three rare birds that breed there every year. The Nightjar comes all the way from sub-Saharan Africa, the Dartford warbler braves our winters and the Woodlark announces its return each year with lyrical song. All three nest on very near to the ground and visitors can help give their chicks the best chance of survival by sticking to paths and keeping dogs out of vegetation March to mid-September. The nesting birds give this land its legal protection and, by looking after the birds, we can all play our part in making sure that protection stays in place.
How can I help?
The Thames Basin Heaths Partnership team would love you to fall in love with local heathlands and help secure their future. Caring visitors can help by...
  • Sticking to main paths [8] to avoid disturbing rare heathland birds that nest on the ground.
  • Using 'Greenspace on your doorstep', local country walks that help protect the heathlands. The Thames Basin Heaths Partnership's directory [9] lists over 60 dog-friendly, safe and sociable circular walks that are well worth seeking out.
  • Reducing the risk of fire. Please, no fires or BBQ's, ensure cigarettes are out and take all litter home.
