Be a bin-fluencer this Christmas!

Hart District Council are calling on their bin-fluencers to help share important information on changes to festive bin collection dates.

Share the magic

Each year we provide information on when bin crews will be collecting rubbish and recycling over the festive season and into the new year.

This year, there will be changes to the days waste and recycling bins are collected and these can be checked on our website.

But we're keen to keep spreading the Christmas bin collection news and are calling on people to help share this information with local family, friends and neighbours – establishing themselves as one of the area’s bin-fluencers!

Christmas collections

Changes to the bin collections over the festive period allow the bin crews, who collect from over 25,000 homes across both Hart and Basingstoke every day, to spend time with family and friends on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The changes mean that those residents due a collection on Wednesday 25 December this year will receive a collection on Friday 27 December, collections scheduled for Thursday 26 December will move to Saturday 28 December, for example. All residents will have a revised collection date until the crews catch up, including working on Saturdays, to enable bin collections to return to their normal schedule from Monday 13 January 2025. These dates are subject to any adverse weather delaying progress.

As normal, there will be a two-week break for garden waste collections over the festive period. The service will stop after Friday 20 December and start again from Monday 6 January in Hart. Garden waste customers should put their bins out on their normal collection day, the revised Christmas collection dates do not apply to garden waste collections.

Extra waste and recycling

Because the festive period does generate extra waste and recycling, extra rubbish will be collected in rubbish bags placed next to the waste bin for the first collection only after Christmas. We will collect extra recycling throughout the year, as long as this is put in a clear plastic bag next to the recycling bin. Additional flattened cardboard can also be left next to the recycling bin in dry weather, as long as it is no bigger than 1m squared, and all plastic and polystyrene is removed.

Excess glass put out for collection must be stored in a green glass box and must not be overfilled.

Hart residents can order extra free glass boxes from our website or collect from the council offices in Harlington Way, Fleet to secure before Christmas.

Councillor Richard Quarterman, Hart District Council Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services and Climate Change said: “Waste and recycling is always a key service, and never more when there is the excess of Christmas to take away! We hope by encouraging everyone to share this information where they can, no-one will be taken by surprise by the change to the Christmas schedules.

“While we’ve put services in place to deal with the extra waste the festive period inevitably brings, we’d also encourage everyone to think about any ways they might be able to reduce the waste generated during this period.”

Residents can check what day their bins are collected online any time of year. More information on festive bin collections and recycling is also available at www.hart.gov.uk/waste-and-recycling/christmas-2024
