Almshouses
Almshouses are usually owned, maintained and let by a charity or trustees. You need to meet certain criteria to qualify for an almshouse. Some almshouses apply age-restriction criteria that prioritise older people.
An almshouse is usually unfurnished one-bedroom accommodation, typically a bungalow or flat. Residents live in the almshouse under a 'licence to occupy' agreement.
You will be responsible for paying:
- a weekly maintenance charge (if you receive Housing Benefit this may be covered)
- weekly heating charge
- weekly lighting charge
- Council Tax (unless exempt)
- TV licence
- telephone bill
